Celebrating the Summer Solstice

Happy Summer Solstice!

While it may seem like summer is well under way, the Summer Solstice signifies the official start of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the point when this side of the world is most tilted towards the sun.

The term solstice translates to a time when "the sun stands still." There are 2 solstices throughout the year (typically June 21st and December 22nd) that represent the longest (in terms of hours of sunlight) and shortest days of the year.

The solstice isn't just important for tracking your Vitamin D intake, it also signifies a hugely important energetic shift that has been celebrated for centuries across the world. In Ancient Incan culture the sun god was a hugely important figure and on this day there were celebrations & sacrifices made to honor this deity. Other cultures including the Ancient Greek, Roman & Egyptian cultures, early Christians, Native Americans and Pagan cultures celebrated this day each year with festivals to some of their most revered gods, special preparations, harvests and an extra sense of magic in the air.

Across the world the Summer Solstice signifies a period of change, a time to release what no longer serves you and to make space for the new. It marks a time to celebrate abundance & beauty while honoring yourself and your intentions for the second half of the year. It's even been said that this is the most magical day of the year and one where our powers of attraction and alchemy are at their highest.

Whether you subscribe to these messages or not, at the very least, the Summer Solstice marks a halfway point in the year and an opportunity to reevaluate our goals and desires, how far we have come and where we are going. Below are some ways you can honor the Summer Solstice by going within and getting in touch with your inner guidance system.

Journaling

Write down what you want to invite into the second half of the year. Consider the following.:

  • What would it look like to achieve all that you wanted over the next 6 months?

  • What would it feel like? Tap into ALL of your sense here (smell, sight, sound, etc.)

  • What has kept you from achieving those goals in the past?

  • What are you ready to let go of?

  • What are you ready to do differently?

Outdoor Grounding Exercises

  • Go out into nature, slip your shoes off and feel your bare feet connect with the earth.

  • Take a walk (shoes optional) and notice the abundance around you. Allow yourself to imagine you are connected to everything and everyone around you - the trees, the birds chirping, other people you might see, etc.

  • Find a comfortable place to sit and meditate for a few minutes. Focus on your breathe. Breathe in all the ways you want to feel (e.g. free, peaceful, calm, love) and breathe out all the things you are ready to release (e.g. stress, fear, overwhelm, etc.)

Fire Ceremony

Step 1: Take a piece of paper and separate or tear it into 6 pieces. On the first 3 pieces write down 3 things that you want to release starting today. As you write them down imagine each one starting to lift off of you, like a weight off your shoulders. Consider who you might be with out each of these. What letting go of these allow you to do, have and be?

Step 2: On the remaining 3 pieces, write down 3 things you are calling in for the rest of the year. Consider what it would feel like to have each of these things and how they might already be starting to show up in your life. Consider what would it mean for you to have each of these things and why are they important to you.

Step 3: Then, very carefully, take the first 3 pieces of paper with what you're ready to release and burn them in a fire safe dish or outside away from any flammables or other potential dangers. As you burn each of these imagine again each of these things falling away and clearing space for the new and let the fire transmute their energy.

Step 4: Then take the next 3 pieces of paper with all you want and hold them to your heart and say out loud what you want as a prayer for the Universe to witness and support you with. Then once again safely burn them as you allow yourself to imagine already having all that you want and calling in the energy and magic of the Summer Solstice to assist you.

I invite you to try one or all of these to practice working with the magic of a new season. And even if you missed the opportunity to do so today, the magic of the solstice is available to us throughout the week so feel free to make some time that works for you.
